Testosterone Management / Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Some men experience symptoms such as low energy, reduced libido, difficulty building muscle, mood changes and poor concentration due to low testosterone levels. This condition, known as testosterone deficiency or hypogonadism, can be confirmed through a clinical assessment and blood tests. For men who meet the criteria, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may help restore hormone levels and improve overall wellbeing. Treatment options include gels, injections or patches, and are tailored to each individual. Ongoing monitoring is essential to ensure safety and effectiveness, as well as to address any underlying health factors contributing to low testosterone. Our aim is to provide a balanced, evidence‑based approach to support men’s health at every stage of life
There are various option available for TRT, these include topical, self injection and assisted by a health professional.
Testosterone replacement therapy can be effective for men with confirmed testosterone deficiency, but it must be prescribed and monitored carefully.
Potential risks include
-
increased red blood cell count (polycythaemia), which can raise the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart problems if not monitored.
-
Some men may experience acne, oily skin or worsening of sleep apnoea.
-
TRT can suppress natural testosterone production and reduce sperm count, affecting fertility.
-
It may also cause breast tenderness or enlargement, mood changes or fluid retention. In men with underlying prostate disease, testosterone can worsen urinary symptoms, and although current evidence does not show that TRT causes prostate cancer, PSA monitoring is essential.
Regular blood tests and clinical reviews are required to ensure safe, effective treatment and to adjust the dose if needed.
Please note: The Management is led by an Endocrinologist and delivered by General Practitioner
